Nearly every American has at least one ancestor who served in the military. Military records dating back to the Revolution are available to researchers. RELIC Librarian Don Wilson will demonstrate strategies for successful military records research in this prerecorded presentation.
August is the last month of summer vacation for most families. With a few more weeks of freedom left, but summer traffic at its worst, some families may want to get one last end-of-summer outing in without spending a lot of time in stop-and-go interstate traffic. RELIC Librarian Kirk Johnson gives a quick virtual tour of various local sites of historical interest that are close to home – even though many would be worth a long drive – in this prerecorded presentation.

TRACKING BUSINESS RECORDS OF PRINCE WILLIAM COUNTY
This article is continued from the "Tracking Business Records of Prince William County,"
RELIC has a number of directories and manuscript records of Prince William County businesses from the nineteenth century to the present.

Among the local business records in RELIC’s manuscripts collection are the following:

Papers of Elias E. Conner (1830 – 1909), primarily a collection of ledgers and business receipts from his general store near Manassas (1850s to 1870s), were donated to RELIC by a descendant. Some of the material has been scanned, but it still lacks organization and a finding aid.

An Alvey General Store Ledger, Catharpin, Virginia, 1870s, was left with RELIC some years ago. It still awaits some attention.

Account Book of W. Fletcher, Buckland, Va., July 1876 – July 1879. Westwood Fletcher (1845 – 1903) obtained a merchant’s license in May 1876 and April 1877. He seems not to have continued his store after that. In 2018, the owners of this ledger loaned it to RELIC to allow us to scan it.

The following items can be seen in our Online Catalog for more detail:

  • C. F. Whitmer and Bros., Manassas, Va., store ledger 18901894, 1900 – 1902.
  •  National Bank of Manassas, ledgers and papers, ca. 1895 to ca. 1930.
  • C. E. Fisher and Son Hardware Store, Manassas, papers, 1926 – 1950.
  • Manassas Community Theatre, scrapbook, 1952 – 1962.

  • Prince William Regional Chamber of Commerce. The Region’s Chamber, 1998 – .
