Project Description: Julie J. Metz Wetland (Neabsco Regional Park) Pedestrian Boardwalk
The Prince William County Department of Parks, Recreation, and Tourism (DPRT) plans to upgrade the existing pedestrian trail through the Julie J. Metz Wetland Bank (Neabsco Regional Park) as part of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail. At the western end of the project, a low boardwalk ties into the existing Neabsco Creek Boardwalk to create a pedestrian connection to the north side of Neabsco Creek. New low boardwalks are proposed through wet areas along with pedestrian bridges to cross several existing channels. Funding for the project is provided by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) through the Recreational Trails Program administered by the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation. Only minor impacts are anticipated to wetlands and streams as a result of the low boardwalk crossings.
In accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), Prince William County has conducted the environmental reviews necessary to evaluate impacts of the proposed trail on cultural resources, noise, air quality, threatened and endangered species, hazardous materials, natural resources, and environmental justice.
