Planning Office

Board of Zoning Appeals

The Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) is composed of seven regular members and three alternate members, who are County residents, appointed to staggered five-year terms by the Circuit Court.  Members must hold no other public office; however one may be a member of the Planning Commission, and any elected official of an incorporated town may serve on the board of the county in which the member also resides. Members may be reappointed. The Board of County Supervisors may make appointment recommendations. Member information.

The BZA reviews and decides appeals of zoning determinations and requests for variances to zoning provisions. See also Section 900 of the Zoning Ordinance in the County Code.

The BZA meets when an application for an appeal or a request for a variance has been submitted. Meetings are held on the third Monday of each month May through December and on the fourth Monday of each month January through April. If the scheduled meeting falls on a holiday, the meeting will be held on the following Monday.

Meetings begin at 2:00 p.m. and are normally held in the Board Chambers of the James J. McCoart Administration Building, located at 1 County Complex Court, Prince William, VA 22192.

BZA meetings are open to the public.
