Prince William County has collaborated with NAKASEC Virginia and Asian American communities to ensure greater language access for residents. Prince William County offers more language support such as paper and digital applications in Korean, Vietnamese, and Dari and a multilingual language phone line to individuals eligible for the Emergency Housing Assistance Program (EHAP). The partnership between Prince William County and Asian American community members provides an opportunity to improve services as part of the language justice campaign. The partnership allows for creating systemic processes of equity and inclusion.
"Prince William County will continue to improve the language process and plant seeds of trust in the community that we are an action-oriented government and with the access of their voice to resources we will continue to improve," said Equity and Inclusion Officer Maria Burgos.
NAKASEC Virginia staff tested the language line in Vietnamese and Korean to ensure a stable and quick connection to the interpreter and representative. The system operated seamlessly and will provide non-English speaking residents a way to communicate and address their concerns regarding their application for the Emergency Housing Assistance Program (EHAP).
"The swift actions that the County took shows their efforts of building a more equitable and inclusive community for all. We look forward to continuing our work with Asian American residents and the County to address the needs of all residents of Prince William County," said Ha Tang, community organizer with NAKASEC VA.
