Car Free Day is a worldwide event that encourages greener methods of travel and commuting.

The National Capital Region Transportation Planning Board organizes and promotes the annual Car Free Day event through its Commuter Connections program, which includes jurisdictional members from across the region.

The Prince William Board of County Supervisors recently proclaimed Thursday, Sept. 22, 2022, as Car Free Day and urged county and regional residents to consider teleworking or alternative forms of transportation, including bicycling, walking, transit, and “carlite” methods such as carpools and vanpools.

Car Free Day supports Prince William County’s Strategic Plan Mobility goal to provide an accessible, comprehensive, multimodal network of transportation infrastructure that improves local and regional mobility objectives of decreasing congestion and fossil fuel use.

Car Free Day benefits the National Capital Region, including Prince William County, through improved air quality, mobility, energy conservation, and reduced parking demands.

County residents are encouraged to take a pledge to be car free on Sept. 22 at www.carfreemetrodc.org.
