When most citizens think of Neighborhood Services, they probably think of patrolling the roads for litter or the neglected property down the street. Many may not realize that Neighborhood Services works with property owners to regulate and maintain elevators, escalators and other lift devices throughout Prince William County. Once an elevator is approved by the County Building Official, Neighborhood Services monitors elevators to make sure that they are safe for operation.
Every lift device in the County requires a valid certificate from the County Building Official. Lifts must be inspected at least every six months. Inspections are completed by third-party companies that have the training and equipment to inspect all the complexities of an elevator system. From cables to pumps, lighting, and communications boxes, the lift is inspected and taken out of service, if necessary.
Citizen complaints and other violations are generated by Neighborhood Services staff through monitoring. Past due inspections, missing certificate fees and failed inspections can generate an enforcement case. Like other Neighborhood Services enforcement cases, a violation notice is sent to the property owner and the elevator may be posted out of service until violations are corrected.
Ensuring elevator and lift safety for County residents is one more way that Neighborhood Services works hard every day to keep citizens safe. Elevator and lift certificates must be posted or available close by for review at any time.
