Bluebird Houses Adorn Property at Chinn, Veterans Park and Rippon Lodge Thanks to Prince William Conservation Alliance

Many people come and go throughout our parks daily but every so often, certain people come along that leave a positive impact. Kevin Parker, along with other members of the Prince William Conservation Alliance (PWCA) are some of those people. Their impact can be seen in the beautiful bluebird houses they built which are scattered throughout the property at Chinn Aquatic & Fitness Center, Veterans Memorial Park and Rippon Lodge.

“The purpose of these bird houses is to allow for observation while still protecting the birds and to also teach people about the importance of habitats,” says Kevin.

Currently, there are 14 nesting boxes at Chinn, 9 at Veterans Park and several located around the property at Rippon Lodge. Bluebird Trail volunteer monitors check the boxes to make sure all is well and record information about what's happening in each nesting box.

Bluebirds cannot make their own holes for nests so they rely on woodpeckers for their homes. However, invasive species of birds have been an issue along with habitat loss. Kevin and other PWCA members as well as members of the VA Bluebird Society were aware of this and so they decided to build these bluebird houses. The houses are monitored once a week and data is recorded to give to the VA Bluebird Society

We invite you to enjoy the bluebird houses as you walk the trails at these properties but we remind you to be respectful of them and only observe with your eyes. With the help of Kevin and others, our bluebirds are better protected.
