The Chinn Aquatics and Fitness Center will undergo a major renovation of the natatorium beginning August 11, 2025 with an anticipated reopening date in December 2025. During this time, the entire natatorium will be closed (this includes all pool, spa areas, and programming.
Scheduled Improvements Include:
• Full resurfacing (whitecoat) and new racing tiles in the main pool
• Installation of a brand-new bulkhead (the walk-way in the middle of the main pool)
• Upgraded filtration systems for both the main and leisure pools
• Replacement of gutter grating
• Resurfacing of the leisure pool
• Regrouting of the pool deck areas
• Removal of the high dive structure
Please note:
The Main Pool, Leisure Pool and both spas will be closed for the entirety of the project
No aquatic programming, Aquatic Group Exercise classes, specialty classes, or swim team practices will take place during the renovation

The bulkhead spans the width of a swimming pool, creating a moveable bridge to divide the pool into a multiple activity pool. The current bulkhead is original to the facility and being replaced as part of our Capital Maintenance program.

Yes, these programs will not take place at Chinn during the closure period. No aquatic programming, Aquatic Group Exercise classes or specialty classes or swim team practices will take place during the renovation.
Department of Parks and Recreation is exploring options to increase offerings for swim lessons at Birchdale Community Pool for the month of September and the Sharron Baucom Dale City Recreation Center throughout the closure period.
Additional Aquatic Group Exercise Classes will be added to the Open Schedule at the Sharron Baucom Dale City Recreation Center.
The Fitness Department will offer low-impact group exercise classes in place of regularly scheduled aqua fitness classes.
Yes, Chinn pass holders can use the pool at the Sharron Baucom Dale City Recreation Center. Please keep in mind that the SBDCRC natatorium does not have the same capacity as Chinn and some programs such as swim lessons and aqua group exercise classes may not be able to accommodate all members.
Yes, you will be able to pause your membership during construction. Check back soon for details on how to do that.
Chinn members are invited to use Freedom Aquatic & Fitness Center as part of your membership during the construction period. To gain entrance:
On your first visit present your Chinn membership scan-card. The front desk will create a profile for you to access their site. This includes taking a picture, signing a waiver, and transacting a special no-charge membership which includes issuance of a Freedom scan-card. Access to Freedom Aquatic & Fitness Center will be valid for Chinn members from 8/11/2025 until 12/1/2025.

In addition to Freedom, staff is working on securing alternate pool locations for Chinn pass holders at the following sites:
Prince William County Schools Aquatics Center. - check back for updates
Birchdale Community Pool - check back for updates
You will hear and experience the construction noise as the contractor will be removing multiple layers of pool whitecoat with the use of jack hammers.
The center will have the air quality tested weekly to ensure mitigation of any potential issues. The HVAC system in the pool area will be turned off during the project and is completely independent from the rest of the building.
The natatorium area will be secured and sealed with plastic to keep any construction debris within the designated area.
Large fans will be used during the construction to ensure proper ventilation in the natatorium to remove construction debris or particles.
The Before and After Entrance and Exit at the rear/side of the building will be closed for the duration of the project. Drop off and pick up will take place at the Spinning Studio Door. (please see directional signage). Program participants will receive communication on drop off and pick up procedures.
The bottom parking lot by the nature trail will be closed to public. This parking lot will be used for construction staging and emergency vehicle access only.
