Get on board - learn to paddleboard!

Have you ever watched those folks at the beach or lake that seem to be walking on water as they float by on paddleboards and wished that you could do it as well? Standup paddleboarding (SUP) has become one of the fastest growing water sports in the world. It is a great way to explore calm lakes, rivers or saltwater. If you’re not familiar with “SUP”, it is a water sport born from surfing with modern roots in Hawaii. Standup paddleboarders stand on boards that are floating on the water and use a paddle to propel themselves through the water.

Instructor Troy Morgan says his passion for SUP actually began on a vacation to Hawaii.

I have been a standup paddleboard instructor for about 5 years. I have been kayaking and canoeing for many years, but my passion for SUP began on a vacation to Hawaii. I tried it and I was immediately hooked,” says Morgan, who teaches SUP at Lake Ridge Park Marina. “The simplicity and connection to the water is amazing.”

Morgan says almost anyone can learn to standup paddleboard, given the right board for their size and weight. He adds that no specific skills are required to get started, other than the ability to swim. “The more comfortable you are in the water, the more comfortable you will be on the board,” says Morgan.

Prince William County Parks, Recreation and Tourism is currently offering intro classes to standup paddleboarding, as well as some paddle sports camps for kids that includes SUP instruction.

“We get two types of participants in the SUP classes, those who have never paddled SUP before and those who are looking to improve their skills,” says Morgan. “Many people are surprised there are specific techniques they can learn to paddle and steer efficiently. I have no problem paddling my board and keeping up with kayaks but this takes some technique and a relatively efficient board.”

For those who may be a little intimidated by the thought of paddling SUP, Morgan suggests keeping an open mind and relaxing. “Our class is 3 hours long. We start on land with the basics, progress to the water to try out the techniques, then apply the skills in a short paddle in a protected area. If you like the water, you will love paddleboarding!”

When asked what three words he would use to describe the water sport, he replied, “Paddling SUP is convenient, exciting and fun!”

He also adds that paddling SUP is an amazing workout using your entire body to control and move the board over the water.
