Homeless Services is committed to preventing and ending homelessness. Through our Coordinated Entry System (CES) we strive to immediately assess the needs of households seeking assistance and quickly connect them to the most appropriate resource for their circumstances. Contact the Coordinated Entry System (703) 792-3366 (TTY: 711). Click here for more information about CES.

Prince William Area Continuum of Care (PWA CoC) promotes community-wide commitment to the goal of ending homelessness. The goal of the PWA CoC is to quickly re-house homeless households to minimize trauma and dislocation. PWA CoC promotes access to effective utilization of mainstream programs; and optimizes self-sufficiency among households experiencing homelessness.

What is the PWA CoC Point in Time (PIT) Count?

The PIT is an annual count of persons experiencing homelessness on a single night each year in January as required by the Department of Housing & Urban Development (HUD). The Prince William County Department of Social Services (DSS) is the lead for the Prince William Area Continuum of Care (PWA CoC), which includes the areas of Prince William County and the cities of Manassas and Manassas Park.

Why is the PIT Count Important?

The PIT provides a “snapshot” of the nature and extent of homelessness in our area. The data collected during the count is used to inform funding decisions, support services and resource planning, as well as, raise public awareness about homelessness.

This year’s count will take place on Wednesday, January 24th and end on Thursday, January 25th. The count will be conducted in multiple "shifts" throughout the 24-hour period with a back-up date of Thursday, January 25th to Friday, January 26th in case of inclement weather.

As in previous years, we are in need of volunteers to help us complete the “unsheltered” portion of the count, which involves visiting places where persons experiencing homelessness are sleeping in a “place not meant for human habitation” (such as their vehicle, an abandoned building, or anywhere outside). Volunteers will be placed in teams, led by an experienced “Team Lead”, and will complete surveys with participants at pre-identified locations.

We also need your help identifying locations where persons experiencing unsheltered homelessness may be sleeping. This information will help us ensure full coverage of our CoC as well as a more accurate count. Please click the link below to complete the “Encampment Survey” for each known location.

2024 PIT Encampment Survey

There are scheduled food trucks at various locations throughout the Prince William Area to provide a hot meal on the night of January 24, 2024 PIT Count. This initiative aims to not only gather crucial data but also ensure that individuals and families experiencing homelessness have access to a warm meal on this critical night. By spreading the word about this event, we can maximize participation and accurately capture the scope of homelessness in our community.
