Snow Removal

The removal of snow from private streets and parking areas (usually located in apartment, condominium, and townhouse communities) is the responsibility of the Developer, Community Manager, or Homeowners' Association (HOA). If you are unable to contact your HOA, please contact the Department of Public Works at 703-792-7018 for additional resources.

Snow removal from residential public streets (generally located within single-family communities) is the responsibility of the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT). The exception are streets that are under construction; while being constructed these streets are privately maintained and are the responsibility of the builder/developer. Maintenance responsibility shifts to VDOT following construction and a transfer of street ownership as part of the VDOT roadway acceptance process. Neither the County nor VDOT removes snow from sidewalks. To reach VDOT, please visit the VDOT Winter Weather site or call 1-800-367-ROAD (7623).

Road Priorities - Snow is first removed from predetermined Snow Emergency Routes. Roads are cleared from highest to lowest traffic volume. Priority is always given to the roads most needed by the community as a whole, generally in this order:

  • Interstates (I-95 I-66 I-495 etc.)
  • High-volume routes (Route 1 Route 28 Prince William Parkway etc.)
  • Main thoroughfares in neighborhoods or developments
  • Residential streets
  • Cul-de-sacs

VDOT has a web tool that shows the status of plowing in northern Virginia neighborhoods. The webpage at www.vdotplows.org  activates when two or more inches have accumulated.
