PERSONAL PROPERTY TAX EXEMPTION FOR FULL-TIME COLLEGE STUDENTS WHO ARE NOT RESIDENTS OF VIRGINIA

Full-time college students maintaining a legal domicile outside of Virginia who reside in Prince William County solely for education purposes may qualify for an exemption from the local vehicle personal property tax based on certain qualifying conditions provided by Va. Code § 58.1-3511(A).

Example: A student attending a Virginia based school who is legally domiciled in another state and is paying a personal property tax in their legal domicile may qualify for an exemption.

How to Apply

Submit the required supporting documents:

  • Enrollment verification from the National Student Clearinghouse
  • Current personal property taxes paid

Please be advised that non-resident students who have not paid a personal property tax in their legal domicile will not qualify for the full exemption, however, they will qualify for a waiver of the License Plate Tax and penalty and will still be liable for the general tax fees and registration fee.
