The Prince William Board of County Supervisors has proclaimed May as Building Safety Month.

Building Safety Month is a public awareness campaign to help residents, families, students, business owners and visitors understand what it takes to create safe and sustainable structures and why it is so important. The month-long campaign also reinforces the need for public safety, modern-day building codes, a well-trained, highly skilled workforce, and a strong and efficient system of code enforcement.

The theme for this year’s International Code Council 43rd annual Building Safety Month is:  “It Starts with You!”

The weekly themes are:

  • Week 1 (May 1–7): “Building Safety Starts at Home”
  • Week 2 (May 8-14): “Building Safety Professionals and You”
  • Week 3 (May 15-21): Prepare Your Community”
  • Week 4 (May 22-28) “Advocate for Your Community”
  • Week 5 (May 29–31) “Solving Challenges Together”

Agencies across Prince William County, including the Department of Development Services, Building Development Division, Fire Marshal’s Office, Prince William Public Libraries, Prince William Health Department, and the Department of Communications all participate in Building Safety Month.

The board’s proclamation recognized and thanked all the dedicated building safety and fire prevention officials and staff who develop and enforce codes to protect residents in the buildings where they live, work, worship, play and learn.

Mandi Spina, Acting Director, Department of Development Services shared “Building Safety plays an integral part of all our lives, from the commercial buildings we shop in, to the homes that we live in. We are continuously focused on ensuring our residents know how to keep buildings and homes safe in May and throughout the year.”

Ensuring all residents and business communities can access information about building safety and disaster preparedness is a top priority in May and year-round. This month, County staff hosted several free community outreach events across Prince William County, along with sharing important safety messages via news releases and spreading the word across social media about #BuildingSafetyMonth2023.

The next community outreach event takes place on Tuesday, May 30, 2023 at 1:00 pm in the Jean McCoy Conference Room, Sudley North Government Center, 7987 Ashton Ave, Manassas, VA 20109 and is available online via Teams at: Click here to join the meeting. Look out for future events in your neighborhood!
