We all have a role in making sure the places where we live, work and play are safe. Complying with building safety codes and the officials who enforce them can help mitigate the risk of injuries, property damage and save lives.

As part of our "Building Safety is Local" theme, this week we're highlighting "Building Safety – Advocate for Your Community" which emphasizes the important role that building safety and you play in keeping our homes, schools, and businesses safe.

Join us today, Tuesday, May 23, 10:00 am – 1:00 pm, at Haymarket Gainesville Library, 14870 Lightner Road, Haymarket, VA 20169 or on Thursday, May 25 10:00 am – 1:00 pm at Bull Run Library, 8051 Ashton Ave, Manassas, VA 20109. Here we'll share important building and fire safety tips, home maintenance know-how and share how to advocate for building safety in the community, as even the smallest action can make a difference.

Here are a few things you can do:

  • Encourage everyone to create an emergency response plan. In the event of an emergency, it’s crucial to set up a response team and develop an evacuation plan.
  • Plan community events to raise awareness or attend local events about building safety.
  • Educate people in your neighborhood to learn how to identify if a building is safe.
  • Join in the conversation about #BuildingSafetyMonth2023 and share fact-based information and resources on social media accounts.
  • Share news releases with local news, radio stations and television networks to encourage local media to cover stories related to building safety.
