Duane Prophet Appointed Director of Information Technology for Prince William County

Following an extensive national search, Prince William County Executive Chris Shorter has appointed Duane Prophet as the director of the county’s Department of Information Technology. Prophet will begin his new role Monday, Sept. 28. 

In his role as director, Prophet will provide strategic leadership and operational oversight for the county’s technology enterprise, including enterprise systems, infrastructure, cybersecurity, cloud services, business applications, digital services, data governance and emerging technologies. He will serve as a strategic advisor to county leadership and lead technology planning, digital transformation and modernization efforts to ensure the county’s technology is secure, reliable and positioned to meet the evolving needs of the organization and community. 

Prophet brings more than 25 years of public-sector technology experience, leading technology initiatives and teams across complex local government operations. He joins Prince William County from Prince George’s County, Maryland, where he served as Director of Digital Government. In that role, he oversaw enterprise platforms, data and analytics, digital services and the adoption of emerging technologies across county government. 

Prophet has spent his career with Prince George’s County, beginning as an entry-level clerk and advancing through increasingly responsible technology and leadership positions. In 2025, he served as acting chief information officer, directing an enterprise IT organization of more than 170 employees. He also chaired key technology governance initiatives, including the county’s AI Task Force and ERP Steering Committee.

Prophet holds a Bachelor of Science in information systems management from the University of Maryland. He also holds numerous professional technology certifications.
