May is Building Safety Month. Look for important messages, safety tips and special features from the County throughout May, as we raise awareness about Building Safety.

“Building Safety Month is very important as it helps to improve public safety by increasing awareness about how building codes and code officials work to protect the places where we live, learn, play, work, worship and retire!” said Wade A. Hugh, Director, Department of Development Services. “We can’t think of anything more important than the safety of our residents, business owners and visitors.”

Forty-two years ago, the International Code Council established May as Building Safety Month. This year’s month long theme is Safety for All: Building Codes in Action. The weekly themes for Building Safety Month 2022 are:

  • Week One (May 1-8): “Planning for a Safe & Sustainable Tomorrow”
  • Week Two (May 9–15): “Exploring Careers in Building Safety”
  • Week Three (May 16–22) “Understanding Disaster Mitigation”
  • Week Four (May 23–31) “Creating a Safe & Abundant Water Supply”

“This year’s Building Safety Month focuses on issues that currently impact our everyday lives: building safety, energy, water, and disasters. These factors are a constant concern for our homes, schools, businesses, and communities. It makes the role of modern building codes even more important as we strive to keep them well-built and resilient,” said Code Council Chief Executive Officer Dominic Sims, CBO.

Each year, the Code Council, its members, and professionals from the construction industry and related fields highlight building safety through proclamations, informational events, legislative briefings, and more.
