Winter Weather Resources

The sun is out, and after several days indoors, many people are eager to get back to work, run errands or simply get out of the house. Before heading out, please take a moment to review the information below to help keep yourself and others safe and to ensure emergency resources remain available for those who truly need them.

Roads:

  • VDOT is responsible for maintaining the public roads in the county and are actively working to clear thick ice and treat roadways to help with re-icing, including neighborhood and subdivision streets today. This work takes time, and we appreciate your patience as conditions improve.
  • You can follow VDOT plows and see where they have operated over the last six hours, at plows.vdot.virginia.gov.
  • Check out real-time road conditions before you leave by visiting 511.vdot.virginia.gov, using the free mobile app or calling 511 from any phone in Virginia.
  • As more people return to the roads, make sure your vehicle is clear of snow and ice, have a winter car safety kit, allow plenty of extra time and treat anything that looks wet as ice. If you come across any hazards on the roadway, please report them to 800-FOR-ROAD or my.vdot.virginia.gov.
  • If your road has not been plowed at all, check here to see if it is maintained by VDOT. If it is, call 800-FOR-ROAD.

Shoveling:

  • Unfortunately, our public safety personnel cannot plow or shovel your driveway. They can, however, get to you over the snow and ice, if you are having an emergency. So, please call 9-1-1 if you are having an emergency. If it is not an emergency, you can call 703-792-6500.
  • If you need to shovel, please be aware that cold weather puts added strain on the heart. And ice is much heavier than snow, causing even more strain.
  • Dress warm, and slow down when working in cold weather.
  • Take frequent breaks.
  • If you are able to shovel your sidewalk, please do so. This will help so that people don’t have to walk in the roadways.
  • If you are using salt to de-ice, be salt smart and help the environment. Find out more here
  • If you are an older adult or know of an older adult that needs someone to help shovel their drive, contact 571-292-5316. It will have prompts based on the need for shoveling (critical/non-critical/information only). This number goes to Volunteer Prince William and volunteers assigned to assist with snow shoveling. Non-emergency requests for information will be forwarded to the Area Agency on Aging.
  • If you are willing to help shovel snow or provide transportation to appointments, please contact Volunteer Prince William at https://tinyurl.com/a6xj7ajh or email [email protected].
