Pesticide Collection Event at James S Long Regional Park
Safely Dispose of Unwanted Pesticides
The Virginia Cooperative Extension (VCE), in partnership with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS), will host a Pesticide Collection Event at James S. Long Regional Park on Wednesday, September 16, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
This free program provides agricultural producers, licensed pesticide dealers, pest control companies, golf courses, and homeowners with an opportunity to safely dispose of unwanted pesticides in an environmentally responsible manner.
Since the program began in 1997, more than 1.9 million pounds of pesticides have been collected and properly destroyed throughout Virginia.
Who Can Participate?
The program is open to:
- Agricultural producers
- Licensed pesticide dealers
- Pest control companies
- Golf courses
- Homeowners
How the Program Works
Participants are responsible for transporting unwanted pesticides to the collection site, where a hazardous waste disposal contractor will package and prepare the materials for proper disposal.
If you are unable to safely transport your pesticides, assistance may be available. Please contact VDACS or your local ANR extension agent to discuss your situation.
How to Prepare for Disposal
Before attending the event:
- Conduct an inventory of the pesticides you plan to dispose of.
- Store unwanted pesticides safely until the collection event.
- If you have unknown chemicals totaling more than 5 gallons or 50 pounds, contact your local Virginia Cooperative Extension office to schedule a visit with a pesticide investigator for sampling.
- If you have more than 3,000 pounds of pesticides or need assistance transporting materials, contact VDACS before the event.

When registering, please indicate whether you have totes or mini-bulks. Paper registration forms are also available through your local Virginia Cooperative Extension office.
