Federal Investment Supports Pedestrian and Bicycle Bridge in North Woodbridge

Members of the Board of County Supervisors and county staff were recently presented with a $1-million check to go toward the construction of the North Woodbridge Pedestrian Bridge that will cross U.S. Route 1 in North Woodbridge. The check was presented by Congressman Eugene Vindman, who patroned the community project funding.
The 425-foot North Woodbridge Pedestrian Bridge will provide a safe way for pedestrians and cyclists to cross the high-volume, six-lane roadway to access the Woodbridge Virginia Railway Express, or VRE, station. The bridge will connect the station’s Kiss and Ride facility on the east side of Route 1 to the existing trail network and planned mixed-use development on the west side, just north of Occoquan Road. Construction is anticipated to begin this fall and be completed by summer 2029.
Board of County Supervisors Chair At-Large Deshundra Jefferson spoke at the check presentation ceremony and said the bridge is a critical project for North Woodbridge.
“We have a lot of exciting development that’s going to come to this area that’s really going to transform, not just this corridor, but Prince William County,” Jefferson said. “The Woodbridge VRE is an important connection point for us, not just the county, but in the region.”
Potomac District Supervisor and VRE Operations Board Chair Andrea Bailey said the bridge will strengthen connections around the station and improve access to transit.
“We need the surrounding infrastructure to support transit as well,” Bailey said. “I look forward to seeing this project completed and the incredible connection to this vibrant transit hub as it provides more mobility to our community.”
Vindman, who said he has used the station, said projects, such as building bridges, takes a team.
“These projects don’t get done without working hand-in-hand in partnerships with local leaders, and we’ve had the privilege of working with local leaders, strong local leaders, who care deeply about their community,” Vindman said. “As lawmakers and as Virginians, it is our responsibility to listen to our communities and respond.”
Prince William County Department of Transportation Director Rick Canizales said the bridge will improve access to transit and strengthen connections for pedestrians and cyclists traveling through the area. The bridge, which will comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act, will be part of a planned segment of the bicycle/pedestrian network in the Comprehensive Plan that connects to the National Capital Trail Network.
“This project not only completes a project in our Comprehensive Plan, but also addresses our strategic plan goal of enhancing connectivity through improved pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure,” Canizales said.
North Woodbridge has been identified for strategic investment of transportation infrastructure to support the projected population, housing and employment growth. The project complies with the North Woodbridge Small Area Plan, which guides development and infrastructure improvements near transit to support economic growth.
