Exploring English Language Learning at Prince William Public Libraries

single news

In a recent episode of the Prince William Public Libraries’ podcast, "Important Library Stuff," host Emily Bickers meets with dedicated staff members Sunny Kim from Bull Run Library and Maggie Dobrev from Potomac Library as they discuss PWPL's programs and resources for English Language Learners while providing a welcoming environment for individuals on their journey to becoming more proficient in English.

At PWPL, English language learning is not confined to traditional classroom settings. Sunny, who oversees the ELL Reading Passages program and the ELL Book Club, emphasized the importance of creating a relaxed and supportive atmosphere. Through engaging discussions on various topics, including history, culture, and current events, participants improve their language skills and boost their confidence in speaking English.

Maggie facilitates the English Conversation group, providing a platform for participants to practice conversational English in a casual and welcoming environment. Weekly sessions cover a range of topics, from daily experiences to broader discussions on issues like healthcare and influencers.

PWPL offers resources to support English language learning through our Digital Library, like Pronunciator and Transparent Languages, which provide structured language courses and pronunciation practice. Additionally, the library hosts Spanish Conversation classes and Spanish Story Times and offers world language books in various languages to cater to the area’s diverse community.

One of the key aspects of PWPL's ELL programs is the sense of community and encouragement among participants. Creating a supportive atmosphere helps individuals be motivated to learn and grow together. Success stories, such as patrons landing jobs or gaining confidence in everyday interactions, inspire learners and staff alike.

As Sunny aptly puts it, PWPL is not just about learning; it's about embracing the journey. Whether exploring a new language, learning through reading, or participating in programs, the library offers endless possibilities for personal growth and community engagement.
