It’s against the law to drive too slowly in the left lane, and police officers can issue tickets to people who do so.

Virginia law states in part that “Any vehicle proceeding at less than the normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the conditions existing, shall be driven in the lane nearest the right edge or right curb of the highway.”

Prince William Police Officer Dan Lapihuska said that driving too slowly in the left lane presents a couple of problems. “Violators not only block the smooth flow of traffic, but also create a dangerous situation as traffic builds around them. Emergency vehicles also use the left lane to pass motorists quickly and safely while responding to emergency calls.”

Lapihuska said the law applies to all multi-lane roads not just interstate highways.

Driving too slowly in the left lane can come with fines, Lapihuska said. “Officers will give warnings or tickets if they see you drive in the left lane. A violation is a traffic infraction with a maximum fine of $250.”
