Prince William County Earns Charging Smart Bronze Designation

Prince William County has earned a Charging Smart Bronze designation for its commitment to expanding electric vehicle, or EV, charging infrastructure through policies, practices and incentives that support cleaner transportation options.

Charging Smart is a U.S. Department of Energy national recognition and technical assistance program. Local governments earn Charging Smart Gold, Silver or Bronze designations by meeting nationally recognized best practices for creating EV-friendly communities.

Prince William County is the sixth county in Virginia to receive a Charging Smart designation. The county worked with Charging Smart's no-cost technical assistance team to strengthen local knowledge of EV infrastructure and implement best practices that improve the efficiency of EV charger deployment, support economic development and advance clean energy goals.

“Earning Charging Smart Bronze reinforces our commitment to increasing access to clean transportation options in the county,” said Giulia Manno, the county’s Director of the Office of Sustainability. "This recognition validates the work we've done to make EV charging more accessible while creating a strong foundation for future improvements. We look forward to building on this achievement and continuing progress toward meeting the county’s long-term climate mitigation and resiliency goals."

Encouraging zero-emission vehicles and charging was identified as one of the 25 high-priority actions outlined in the county’s Community Energy and Sustainability Master Plan, the roadmap for achieving the county’s climate goals.

The county earned the designation by implementing policies and practices that improve the efficiency of EV charger installation and support long-term transportation planning. The county has installed public EV chargers at the James J. McCoart Administration Building, works with local electric utilities to promote EV programs and is expanding charging capacity to support additional electric vehicles in the county fleet.

The Bronze designation also supports the Prince William Board of County Supervisors' 2025-2028 Strategic Plan by advancing the Environment Goal through expanded access to clean transportation and reducing greenhouse gas emissions while supporting the Mobility Goal through continued investment in modern transportation infrastructure.

"This designation reflects Prince William County's commitment to building a sustainable and resilient community while preparing our transportation infrastructure for the future," said County Executive Chris Shorter. "Thanks to the Board of County Supervisors' vision and leadership, we are advancing the environment and mobility goals of the county's Strategic Plan while building a cleaner, more connected future for our community."
