Prince William County Partners with Local Jurisdictions to Offer Weekly Virtual Programming for Older Adults and Adults with Disabilities

When senior centers throughout the region closed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many began offering virtual programming for their members such as fitness classes to help older adults stay fit, flexible and balanced, social events to connect with friends, arts and crafts classes to encourage creative expression and reduce stress, and lectures and performances to educate and entertain. Over many months, these events created connection while people remained physically distant.

Although centers have reopened, the need for virtual programming persists. Even before the pandemic, many older adults and adults with disabilities lived in isolation, rarely able to leave home. Additionally, some former center participants no longer feel safe returning to the centers they once enjoyed.

To address the continued need for virtual programming, five Northern Virginia jurisdictions have partnered to offer weekly virtual programming for older adults and adults with disabilities. Arlington County, Fairfax City, Fairfax County, Prince William County and the town of Vienna have begun hosting live virtual programming on Zoom five days a week.

The events range from fitness classes to special presentations to interactive games. This resource is free and all older adults and adults with disabilities who live in Northern Virginia are welcome to use it.
