On Jan. 15, 1993, the Prince William Board of County Supervisors authorized the creation of a Human Rights Commission. The Human Rights Commission enforces the Human Rights Ordinance through the investigation of complaints, provides outreach and education to the public, staffs the Human Rights Commission and responds to public information requests.

File a Complaint
If you think you have been discriminated against in the areas of employment, housing, credit, public accommodation, or education because of your race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, status as a veteran you can file a complaint of discrimination.

Employment
Employment discrimination generally exists where an employer treats an applicant or employee less favorably merely because of a person’s race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or status as a veteran.

Housing
Housing discrimination is the illegal practice of discriminating against buyers or renters of dwellings based on person’s race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or status as a veteran.

Education
Discrimination in education occurs when a person or entity takes unfair action (or inaction) against people because of a person’s race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or status as a veteran in enjoying a full right to educational opportunities.

Public Accommodations
Public accommodations discrimination happens when someone is denied access to the facilities or services of a business or other public place, including local and state government.

Credit
It’s illegal for a creditor to discriminate in any aspect of credit transaction based on race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, or status as a veteran.
