The mission of the Crossing Guard Unit is to ensure the safe passage of children as they walk to and from school, through comprehensive training of all crossing guards and a continuing commitment to safety and excellence.

The Crossing Guard Unit is looking for qualified individuals interested in becoming School Crossing Guards. This is a part-time position. Crossings fall between the hours of 7 to 9:15 a.m., and 2 to 4:15 p.m., Monday through Friday, when school is in session. Applicants must be available to work morning and afternoon crossings.

Crossing Guard applicants must:

  • Have a working vehicle, a valid driver's license and a working telephone
  • Have a good driving record
  • Have no convictions, guilty pleas, or "no contest" to any of the following:
  1. A felony, or any offense that would be a felony if committed in Virginia
  2. A misdemeanor crime of a serious nature, or a crime that indicates a tendency to disregard the law
  3. Any misdemeanor involving moral turpitude including, but not limited to, petit larceny
  4. Any misdemeanor sex offense including, but not limited to, sexual battery or consensual sexual intercourse with a minor 15 or older.
  5. Domestic assault
  • Not have committed any undetected crimes of a serious or repetitive nature
  • Not have any arrest, or pattern of arrests, that will degrade public confidence in the Police Department. Applicants are not required to reveal expunged arrest records, and such cannot be used to disqualify an applicant
  • Pass an employment physical provided through Prince William County government
  • Comply with Police Department's body art and facial hair regulations
  • Be at least 18 years old with a high school diploma, or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) or its equivalent.

Paid training and uniforms are provided. Applicants must pass the free training provided by the Police Department’s Crossing Guard Unit.
