George T. Stewart, who was recently elected to the Prince William Board of County Supervisors, was sworn in Friday, Nov. 14, to represent the Gainesville Magisterial District.
After taking the oath of office, administered by Clerk of the Circuit Court Jacqueline C. Smith, Stewart, a U.S. Navy veteran, spoke to a crowd of family, community members and elected officials in the atrium at the McCoart Government Center.
Stewart noted that he didn’t run against anything in the Nov. 4 election. Rather, he said, he ran for the community and promised to work for the good of the district. He also said he planned to build a coalition of people from across the political spectrum to get the job done.
“I’m looking to raise an army of Republicans, Democrats, Independents that want to have their voice heard …,” Stewart said.
Stewart acknowledged that the role comes with challenges but affirmed his readiness to meet them head-on.
“There are some things to do. There are some challenges, some headwinds that we’re facing as a county right now, especially on the western side of the county,” he said. “My willingness to lead is really a willingness to serve.”
After completing his active-duty Navy service from 1986 to 1991, Stewart moved to Vancouver, British Columbia, where he launched his own business and served on the Vancouver Board of Trade. He returned to New York City in 1994, beginning a new chapter on Wall Street as a financial consultant with Merrill Lynch and later as a proprietary trader for the Schonfeld Group.
Stewart credited his family’s tradition of civic engagement with shaping his values and approach to public service. His local service includes roles as secretary of the Dominion Valley Homeowners Association, vice chair of the Gainesville Democratic Committee, vice chair of the Prince William County Board of Equalization and membership on the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Commission.
He is the father of two daughters—Madison Stewart of Vancouver, British Columbia, and Arabella Stewart of Haymarket, Va.—and the grandfather of Malakai, who lives in Vancouver. Stewart also thanked his wife, Andrea, calling her his conscience and “the very embodiment of everything I love about life.”
Stewart succeeds the late Gainesville District Supervisor Bob Weir.
