Prince William County Kicks Off Building Safety Month 2026: "Safe Homes, Strong Communities"

Today marks the beginning of the first week of Building Safety Month 2026, an international campaign celebrated every May. This year’s overarching theme is “Built to Last,” focusing on how modern building codes and safety professionals create resilient communities.

The Prince William County Department of Development Services is leading the local effort, starting with the Week 1 theme (May 1–10): “Safe Homes, Strong Communities”. This week is dedicated to educating residents on simple, practical actions they can take to improve safety and reduce risks within their own homes.

Educational Highlights: Simple Actions for a Safer Home

Building safety starts with awareness and routine maintenance. Residents are encouraged to review these key safety areas:

• Fire & Electrical Safety:
  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide alarms monthly and replace batteries annually.
  • Avoid overloading electrical outlets and inspect cords for fraying or damage.
  • Keep space heaters at least three feet away from flammable materials.
• Preventing Everyday Hazards:
  • Keep walkways and stairs clear of clutter to prevent slips, trips, and falls.
  • Ensure all emergency exits are clearly marked and remain unblocked.
  • Check for water safety by inspecting plumbing for leaks and securing self-latching gates around pools.
• The Power of Permits:
  • Many home improvements, such as structural changes or electrical upgrades, require a permit.
  • Proper permitting ensures that your project meets Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Codes, protecting your property's value and your family's safety.
