The Racial and Social Justice Commission hosted its third meeting of the year. The commission elected Oliver C. Allen, Jr as the parliamentarian and Vicky Castro as the secretary. Prince William County's new Equity and Inclusion Officer Maria Burgos offered a presentation on "Empowering Equity and Inclusivity." Ms. Burgos discussed action-based processes to support the commission's recommendations and equity terms to build a common understanding of systemic racism.
The Commission members heard presentations and public comments on policing, education, government services, and human rights. Police Chief Newsham discussed the diversity of the current workforce, community engagement, bias training, and recruitment efforts.
The Prince William Board of County Supervisors created the Commission to examine the state of racial and social justice for people of color in policing, the provision of government services, and public education.
