What’s in Your Well Water?

Public water supplies are tested daily for contaminants, but most private water supplies, like wells, are rarely tested. Well owners are encouraged to test their water regularly to detect and correct problems early.

The Virginia Household Water Quality Program (VAWQP) tests water samples for iron, manganese, nitrate, lead, arsenic, fluoride, sulfate, pH, total dissolved solids, hardness, sodium, copper, total coliform bacteria and E. coli bacteria.

Because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the Virginia Cooperative Extension held a virtual well water clinic in August 2020 to educate County residents about how to safely and accurately test their wells. Prior to the online event, well owners purchased their water testing kits via drive-by pick-up. Nearly 80 residents participated in the clinic, and 85 kits were sold. The Virginia Cooperative Extension will follow these same safety protocols for the 2021 clinics.
