- A felony or any offense that would be a felony if committed in Virginia.
- A misdemeanor crime of a serious nature or a crime that indicates a tendency to disregard the law.
- Any misdemeanor involving moral turpitude, including but not limited to, petit larceny.
- Any misdemeanor sex offense including but not limited to sexual battery or consensual sexual intercourse with a minor 15 or older.
- Domestic assault.
- Must not have committed any undetected crimes of a serious or repetitive nature.
- Must not have any arrest or pattern of arrests that will degrade public confidence in the department.
- Must meet established medical, psychological, or physical requirements when noted in the job announcement.

- Must not have a conviction for DUI or a DUI-related conviction within two (2) years preceding the date of application.
- Must not have a conviction for being Intoxicated in Public or related conviction, or be ordered by a judge to obtain counseling for an alcohol related issue within one (1) year preceding the date of application.
- Character
- Must be of sound character as measured by qualities such as loyalty, responsibility, ability to function under stress, control of anger, maturity, and honesty.
- Applicants must not demonstrate a history of immoral or biased behavior online or with social media.
School Crossing Guard (Part-Time)

The Police Department seeks qualified individuals interested in becoming School Crossing Guards.The mission of School Crossing Guards is to ensure the safe passage of children as they walk to and from school, through comprehensive training of all crossing guards and a continuing commitment to safety and excellence.This is a part-time position.

What is the daily work schedule?
- Crossings fall between the hours of 7:00-9:20 a.m. and 2:00-4:20 p.m., Monday – Friday, when school is in session. You must be available to work morning and afternoon crossings.
How are crossing guards paid?

Are crossing guards paid for snow days, teacher’s workdays, and holidays?
- Crossing guards receive three hours per snow day and are not paid for teacher workdays or breaks. Certain holidays are paid.
Can crossing guards earn additional hours?
- Crossing guards are compensated for meetings, other work related errands, and have opportunities to take on any additional crossing when available.
Is there an opportunity for promotion?
- This is a part-time position with minimal opportunity for promotion.
Are crossing guards permitted to be employed outside of the Crossing Guard Unit?
- Yes, provided the position schedule does not interfere with the crossing schedule and the job is within respectable boundaries.
Do I pay for uniforms?
- Uniforms and all equipment are provided.

- Crossing guards receive 2 weeks of paid classroom training, typically in the mornings and field training at active crossings
