BOCS Sets Crossing Guard Appreciation Day on February 6

single news

On Jan. 20, 2026, the Board of County Supervisors voted to designate Friday, Feb. 6, 2026, as Crossing Guard Appreciation Day in Prince William County.

Each year, Crossing Guard Appreciation Day offers County residents a way to let the highly dedicated school crossing guards – who are in the street protecting our children every school day – know that they are appreciated, and that their work to make our County a safe place to live, work and play is appreciated.

In the 61-year history of the Crossing Guards, there have been no deaths or serious injuries of any child at any school crossing. In the past school year, Crossing Guards conducted 24,850 safe crossings, representing 7,063 school children every day at the county’s public elementary and middle schools.

“Our crossing guards are everyday heroes. Rain or shine, they ensure safe passage, offer warm smiles, and model responsibility and care for the children of Prince William County. We are truly grateful for their commitment,” said Will Fontanez, manager of the Police Department’s Crossing Guard Unit. "These highly qualified individuals are fully prepared, by temperament and training, to meet the challenges of protecting our school children and teaching them the importance of pedestrian safety.

Crossing Guards provide an invaluable service to our community – sometimes under adversarial, dangerous or hostile conditions – in the performance of their duties. There are 70 school crossing guards working 71 crossings at 47 schools in Prince William County.
