May 2025 marks the 45th anniversary of Building Safety Month. First observed in 1980, Building Safety Month raises awareness about critical building safety issues, from structural to fire prevention, plumbing and electrical systems, and energy efficiency.
The Prince William County Board of County Supervisors today proclaimed May 2025 as Building Safety Month, joining the International Code Council’s global public awareness campaign and communities across the United States that are issuing proclamations.
Recognizing the month affirms the Board’s commitment to Building Safety and this year’s theme “Game On!” focusing on raising public awareness on how building safety impacts all our daily lives including places where we work, learn and play.
“We know that families, businesses, schools, hospitals and so many others count on us to deliver on our mission,” shared Mandi Spina, Director, Department of Development Services. “Building Safety is a fundamental responsibility and our commitment to our customers has never been stronger.”
The Board also wishes to acknowledge and express gratitude to County Officials, employees, and all those who ensure our county’s buildings’ safety and uphold our commitment to protect our county’s structures. In Prince William County, three Departments are directly involved in the review, permitting, inspection, and enforcement of the building codes that govern building development. They are the Department of Development Services, Building Development Division, the Department of Public Works, Neighborhood Services Division, and Department of Fire and Rescue, Fire Marshal’s Office.
Get in the game and celebrate building safety and all that Prince William County does to improve the quality of life and business in the community. For more information, visit www.buildingsafetymonth.org.
