The Prince William County Board of County Supervisors has proclaimed May as Building Safety Month, aligning with the International Code Council’s global public awareness campaign and communities across the United States that are issuing proclamations.

This May marks the 46th anniversary of Building Safety Month. First observed in 1980, Building Safety Month raises awareness about critical building safety issues, from structural to fire prevention, plumbing and electrical systems, and energy efficiency.

This year’s theme, “Built to Last,” highlights how resilient infrastructure secures daily life, drives environmental sustainability, and protects properties from natural disasters. The proclamation serves as an official call to action for residents to recognize the year-round, life-saving contributions of local code officials, building inspectors, fire prevention officials and code compliance teams.

“This official resolution shines a bright spotlight on our shared commitment to growth, sustainability, and resilience,” shared Ricky O’Connor, Acting Director, Department of Development Services. “By adopting the national "Built to Last" campaign, Prince William County is celebrating the incredible teamwork that ensures our homes, schools, workplaces, and houses of worship are safe, strong, and ready for the future.”

In Prince William County, three Departments are directly involved in the review, permitting, inspection, and enforcement of the building codes that govern building development. They are the Department of Development Services, Building Development Division, the Department of Public Works, Neighborhood Services Division, and Department of Fire and Rescue, Fire Marshal’s Office. Building safety and fire prevention officials work year-round to guide safe construction.

The Board also wishes to acknowledge and express gratitude to County Officials, employees, and all those who ensure our county’s buildings’ safety and uphold our commitment to protect our county’s structures.
