SOLID WASTE DIVISION

Please read the Solid Waste Patron Notice and Guidelines and Safety Guidelines before visiting the Landfill or Compost Facility.

Managing Trash and Recycling in the Community

The Department of Public Works Solid Waste Division is responsible for the effective and efficient management of the trash and recycled materials generated in Prince William County. Solid Waste staff take this responsibility seriously and work diligently to:

  • reduce the amount of waste that is landfilled
  • safely handle and dispose of hazardous materials
  • operate a safe and environmentally friendly landfill
  • find economical and practical ways to manage trash

The Division’s mission is to improve the quality of life for our residents, and to protect and preserve the natural environment.

Facility Usage

Residents and businesses in Prince William County, the towns of Dumfries, Occoquan, Haymarket and Quantico may use the Prince William County Landfill and Balls Ford Road Compost Facility. Facility Highlights

Prince William County uses many innovative and progressive programs to manage the Landfill. One example is the capture of landfill decomposition gases. These collected gases are used to provide electricity for about 5,000 households and heat for onsite and adjacent facilities.

The Solid Waste Division has received awards for its innovative and environmentally sound practices. For example, in April 2013, the division earned the Governor’s Gold Award for Environmental Excellence. Also, the Prince William County Landfill was awarded the prestigious E4 Virginia Environmental Excellence Program by the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality on April 12, 2011, the only E4 landfill in the state of Virginia.
