On August 20, 2023, EMT Casey Thomas exhibited extraordinary bravery while on duty at Sentara. After encountering a violent psychiatric patient who began targeting hospital staff, Casey took immediate action to protect Charge Nurse, placing himself between her and the attacker. Despite being knocked down and suffering from head injuries, Casey’s determination led him to continue intervening when the attacker moved toward another vulnerable patient, a 19-year-old female. Casey subdued the attacker with the assistance of others until the police arrived. His selflessness and resolve under duress undoubtedly prevented further harm and exemplify the true spirit of heroism.
