Unsafe Structures

If an existing building or a building under construction endangers the public health or safety, County Officials may vacate the building, and may order the owner of the property to remove, repair, or secure the unsafe building.

Existing Buildings
If you are concerned that an existing building has become deteriorated, improperly maintained, a fire hazard, dangerous to life, or dangerous to the public welfare, contact the Public Works Neighborhood Services Office. A Property Code Enforcement Inspector will determine if the building is unfit for human occupancy or an unsafe structure in accordance with the Virginia Building Maintenance Code.

Buildings Under Construction
If you are concerned that a building under construction is deteriorated, improperly maintained, of faulty construction, deficient in adequate exit facilities, a fire hazard, dangerous to life, or dangerous to public welfare, contact the Building Development Division of Development Services. A Building Code Enforcement Inspector will determine if the building is an unsafe structure in accordance with the Virginia Building Construction Code.

Damaged Buildings (Natural Events or Major Incidents)
If building is damaged as a result of fire, vehicle collision, fallen trees, or storm damage, and it is an EMERGENCY situation, contact Public Safety at 911. Only dial 911 in an emergency. The incident commander that responds to the scene will determine if an Emergency Inspection is required by the Building Development Division. A Building Inspector will respond to the scene to determine if the building is unfit for human occupancy or an unsafe structure. The Building Inspector will also complete a Post Damage Report to document the damage and requirements for repairing or demolishing the structure.
