One component of the Comprehensive Plan is housing. Housing is concerned with where and how people live in a community. It looks to ensure that the County remains a place where all individuals have a broad range of affordable, accessible, and desirable housing choices. The Pathway to 2040 Comprehensive Plan Update resulted in the adoption of a new Housing Plan chapter by the Board of County Supervisors on December 13, 2022.

Affordable Housing is one step in achieving the goals set forth in the Plan. The zoning text amendment will incorporate the findings, goals, and policies of the Housing Chapter adopted December 13, 2022.

Board of County Supervisors Initiation

On July 13, 2021, the Board of County Supervisors initiated with RES 21-424, a zoning text amendment and County code amendment to create an Affordable Dwelling Unit Ordinance (AfDU). Prince William County is governed by Sections 15.2-2305 and 15.2-2305.1 of the State code enabling legislation for developing an Affordable Dwelling Unit Ordinance.
